Shigeo Sasaki (佐々木 茂男, Sasaki Shigeo) is a middle-aged man from Maruko's neighborhood. Although he owns his own store, he is most often seen taking care of the trees and plants on the city sidewalks.
He is usually referred to as Sasaki no Jii-san (佐々木のじいさん, Mr. Sasaki).
